The piece Winter Lung was composed in the spring of 2014. My first spring in Cincinnati Ohio after living in the Hague in the Netherlands, for seven years. It was the second big move I ever did in my life, and it was followed by a period of isolation. Beside my wife and her parents, (who hosted us through the whole time that we waited for my Green Card) the only company I had was of two cats.
The piece describes the time before and after the death of our cat Mao, who was my best, and only friend, for many months.
The piece starts as a musical illustration of the flow in an American house through the holidays period. Then, starting with the present through the eyes of Frida the Cat, the music is changing, and is telling the story of Mao, the best Cat in the world, who kept his illness so discreet, and who finally passed away on New Year’s Eve.
Winter Lung was composed originally as a duo for bassoon and piano, and went through many cycles and arrangements since. The performance of Israel Contemporary Players is the piece’s premier.
